RE: An Invitation

Curt,

I decided to run for office this year in large part because I feel government needs to be more accountable to the people it serves. Many Utah voters feel politicians are more accountable to corporations and special interests than they are to the people who elect them. I feel the public’s disillusion with government is only exacerbated by the large amount of money received from these groups by politicians. In short, Utah voters feel under represented, and overlooked.

I write to invite you to join me, in doing two simple things that will send a strong message to our voters that we will reduce the influence of corporate and special interest money in politics.

First, join me in making our campaign contributions more transparent by linking our campaign web sites to the state financial disclosure reports, allowing the people of Provo to see exactly who is contributing to our campaigns. While this information is already available online, I think it’s important for us to take a more active role in communicating this data to District 16 voters. I would also invite you to join me in posting monthly on our websites, all those who have contributed $50 or more to our campaigns, including a description of the relationship to the candidate or policy interest of the donor (see example chart attached).

Second, join me in rejecting all future and returning all previous donations from businesses or special interest groups not headquartered in Utah. Most such entities have tenuous ties to the voters in our state. By pledging to raise money from individuals and Utah businesses or organizations, we will send a strong message to the voters in District 16 that we will be accountable to them.

These two pledges will help create an increased sense of accountability in us, and ensure we have the interests of Provo voters at the forefront of our political priorities.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

RaDene Hatfield
